happened last night. when mitt romney beat president obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we had was in 1960. here are all of the other years that we have since have televised presidential debates. every four years now we have these debates on tv. the only years, though, so these are all the years, right, right? the only years, though, in which you had an incumbent president running against a challenger in all of the years we've had presidential debates on tv are these years. so in terms of understanding the historical context of what happened last night when mitt romney beat president obama in this first debate, this is the universe of like things to compare it to. this is how to understand it in terms of american political history. it's only these years right here. that's it. now, by definition, you never have an incumbent president in this situation more than once. presidents can only serve two terms so there's only one opportunity when they carry into that debate, when they're running for re-election, they carry into that debate the g

into the debates prepared. mitt romney has been preparing for the debates earlier than any candidate we could find on record since july. it took the week of the convention to prepare for the debates. according to "the new york times," he spent eight days preparing for this debate. we expect him to come in ready. he is preparing a bunch of zingers for the debate. we don't think that's how american people will score this. if you want to see zincers, tune into david letterman or seth myers. they want to see a plan to restore economic security for the middle class. that is what the president will accomplish tomorrow night and outline that plan for the american people. >> there is this headline in politico today about how the president needs to avoid quotes that dog him, that washington is broken. one-term proposition. is the debate about avoiding those land mines for the president? keeping the campaign narrative status quo? moving forward, not losing his temper and remaining calm with his substance and not the style? >> i think we see the debates like we saw the convention, which is an opportunity to

debate was over, mitt romney was the only contender with a reason to keep smiling. according to a cnn poll, 67% of adults thought romney won the debate compared to just 25% who picked the president. 46% of undecided voters in a cbs poll gave the win to romney to just 22% for mr. obama. nearly a third of the undecideds were undecided. romney's positive rating rose above 50% for the first time in this campaign in a reuters poll. the president's ratings stayed unchanged at 56%. romney stayed on the attack even though his positions were to be charitable and flatly untrue. here's some of what he said about his tax plan and the economy. >> romney: i'm not in favor of a $5 trillion tax cut. my plan is not to put in place any tax cut that will add to the deficit. my view is we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class but i'm not going to reduce the share of taxes paid by high income people. we have 23 million people out of work. or stop look for work in this country. >> eliot: here's how the obama campaig

can only help the romney campaign and only hurt the obama campaign. last debate between romney and obama, romney cleaned obama's clock. you can tell who won by the poll numbers. having ryan do well in this debate only helps that momentum going forward. at the same time, vice president biden is prone to gaffes. he has talked about the middle-class being in a ditch for the last four years. he has been talking about raising taxes, raising trillions of dollars in taxes. having that one soundbite that biden can across with as a gaffe could really hurt. >> heather: do you think we'll see a more aggressive vice president biden? >> i hope so. one thing about the first debate that democrats will learn that mitt romney and paul ryan, they fact checkers they will get into it. they will say things over and over again that are not true. during the debate the vice president needs to say during the debate, paul ryan that is not true. at the time they can't rely on fact checks for after the debate. >> heather: vice president biden has had problems were with his own fact checkingers. coming out

you for taking my call. i watched the debate and i really thought mitt romney had a real good night. everything that president obama accused him of, he had an answer for. he had all the facts and figures in front of him to tell exactly what he was doing. he did a good job as far as explaining what he would do for energy policy, education, for jobs. that came across really strong. one comment about $90 billion given to bring jobs where we could have hired 2 million teachers really made a huge difference on that, too. president obama looks like he was uncomfortable. he did not look like he wanted to be there. mitt romney had a good night. whether that will show up at the polls is another story. i think mitt romney has a good shot now. if they get mitt romney in there, it is a win for a america, too. host: of next is bernard in south carolina. hello. caller: how are you doing? i do not understand what the caller was saying because mitt romney did not explain anything. he kept saying he knew how to do it, but he never said how he was going to do it. he brought up a lot about what obama

voters, because of that debate being viewed by so many millions of americans last week, that mitt romney was able to reach through the filter of the media as they like to call it, ann romney referred to it that way in an event in florida last week, and beyond those campaign ads, the very nasty campaign ads coming from the obama campaign to talk directly to the american people, and they feel like that's a factor as well. they are also looking at what they call persuadable voters, those are voters who can swing back and forth, and if you look at that latest pew research center poll, which showed the president with an eight point lead just a couple weeks ago, now mitt romney has a five point lead. obviously there is some give and take there in terms of these numbers, but i have to tell you i did talk to another romney campaign aide who was sounding a bit more cautious saying they would prefer this poll had come out on november 4th, not october 8th. >> we will talk to cornell belcher, a pollster for the obama campaign in a moment. dan, the president's campaign, are they saying anything publi
